Internet Security Hardware

Generally, Internet security hardware does not only function as a security device because in most cases, it also has essential functions needed for computer networking. These devices are the hardware firewall, wired router, and of course the wireless router. Thanks to advances in technology, you can find a single device that is basically a combination of a hardware firewall, wired router, and wireless router.

Security Hardware and functions

Before going into much detail about these devices, here is a brief description of their basic functions with regard to computer networking and Internet security:

Hardware Firewall

– A hardware firewall is a separate device that has similar functions to a software firewall. A firewall acts as a gate between your computer and the Internet. It monitors and filters both incoming and outgoing network traffic through the use of rules. A program in your computer, like your Internet browser, will only be able to access Internet resources if a firewall allows it, in the same way, computers or programs from the “outside” or the Internet will not be able to access your computer without being allowed by the firewall. The difference and advantages of both the hardware and software firewall is discussed here in this site. (Tips on how to set up a firewall.)

Wired Router

A router is an “intelligent” device that acts as a bridge from one computer network to another that uses network cables as its interface. This is seen when the home network is connected to an Internet connection or an office department network is connected to another network in the same office.

Wireless Router

A wireless router functions the same way as a wired router does, but it does not use network cables to connect computers to computer networks. Instead, it uses special radio frequencies specified in the 802.11x standards, or the wireless local area network standards. (For more information, read how does a wireless router work.)

Most routers, both wired and wireless versions, have built-in firewalls while acting as a networking switch at the same time. Routers that have both wired and wireless connectivity are also starting to become popular for home networks and small businesses.

Security hardware is an important step in securing your computer and Network!
